Overall Percentile in CAT 2026: Meaning and Use
Overall percentile is the headline number on a CAT scorecard, but it is not the whole admissions story. A candidate can have a strong overall percentile and still be blocked by a weak sectional percentile at institutes that use sectional thresholds. Read both numbers before celebrating or panicking.

Overall percentile is based on relative performance after the CAT scoring process. It is not the percentage of total marks. Use the current CAT official source for exact scorecard language 1.
Sectional percentile - 3 risk points
Institutes may publish minimum sectional thresholds. IIM Ahmedabad’s latest criteria, for example, list both overall and sectional percentile cutoffs by category 2. That is why a balanced 96 can be safer than a lopsided 98 for some profiles.
How to use both numbers - 4-line scorecard review
After each mock, write four lines: overall estimate, VARC estimate, DILR estimate, QA estimate. Then compare the lowest section against target-institute safety bands. Do not average away a weak section.

No. Many institutes also use sectional thresholds and profile criteria.
Can sectional percentile be low when overall is high?
Yes. A strong total score can hide one weak section.

Track overall and all 3 sectional estimates.
