Scaled Score in CAT 2026: Meaning, Use, and Mistakes
Scaled score is the number students quote after results and misunderstand before results. It is not the same as raw marks from an answer key, and it is not the same as percentile. For CAT 2026 content, the page should make the pipeline visible and stop there unless the official notice gives more detail.
Raw score vs scaled score - 2 different numbers
Raw score is calculated from correct, wrong, and unattempted questions under the marking scheme. Scaled score is the adjusted score used after normalization across slots. Use the official CAT site for the current scoring language 1.
Scaled score vs percentile - score is input, percentile is rank
A scaled score supports ranking; percentile communicates the rank position. That is why a score table must say whether it is raw or scaled and which year it describes.
How to use scaled score - 3 safe uses
Safe uses: compare your official section scores, understand score distribution after results, and discuss institute shortlist risk with sectional percentiles. Unsafe use: claiming a fixed scaled score will guarantee a future percentile.
| Use | Safe? | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Official scorecard review | Yes | Use after results |
| Mock prediction | Estimate only | Label clearly |
| Future percentile promise | No | Do not use |
FAQs
Is scaled score the same as CAT marks?
No. Raw marks come first; scaled score is produced after normalisation.
Is percentile calculated from scaled score?
Percentile is based on relative performance after the scoring process.
Can mocks give scaled score?
Mocks can estimate, but official scaled score appears only after CAT processing.
Conclusion
For your next 3 mocks, record raw score and percentile estimate separately. Do not put them in one column.
